How To: Protect Against Skin Cancer

As the summer season begins, we encourage anyone working outside to practice sun safety. Sun is the primary cause of skin cancer, and that means that our region’s farmers and weekend warriors, who work outside most of the time, are at high risk for this disease.

Use these tips from Hurst Farm Supply to protect yourself from skin cancer during the summer months.

Wear Protective Clothing

Cover up your skin with lightweight long-sleeved shirts and pants. Always wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face and UV-blocking sunglasses, when possible.

Use Sunscreen

Sunscreen is incredibly important, but not all options are created equal. Choose a broad spectrum sunscreen to protect skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Experts recommend using sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. When working outdoors, make sure that your sunscreen is water-resistant. You should apply sunscreen all over at least 30 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours.

Examine Your Skin

It’s important to examine your skin head-to-toe at least once a month for any abnormalities. Once a year, make an appointment with your physician to receive a professional skin exam.

Here at Hurst Farm Supply, we care about the safety of each and every one of our customers. Remember to take extra precautions in the summer heat.
