We take great pride in what our customers can accomplish with our products, and we’re excited to see the fruits of their labor. After all, we succeed when they succeed!

That goes far beyond just a good day’s work, though. The West Texas farming industry has a significant impact on our local economy and those on the state and national levels. This is due, in part, to West Texas corn crops.

The Facts About West Texas Corn Crops

While West Texas corn crops only account for around 15% of the total cropping system in West Texas, its quality as feedstuff with major protein content makes it a vital part of livestock production in our area’s dairies and feed yards. Nearby corn processing plants (Azteca and Maseca) also contribute to corn’s position as a beneficial commodity that adds value to other locally-grown products. Across the state and throughout the nation, however, corn has gained significant acreage.

In Texas, corn is the third largest production crop behind cotton and grain sorghum, with its primary growing regions being in Central and South Texas.

Why Corn?

Corn is a friendly, easy-to-manage crop that brings excellent value to crop rotation, as well as an attractive, deep green plant that only adds to the beauty of the South Plains. And while it faces its fair share of challenges (large water uptake, disease complications, difficulty in high heat, etc.), producer ingenuity and industry evolution are paving the way for innovation.

One of these innovations is a corn hybrid with drought-tolerant genes, which allows it to thrive in areas with limited water supply. This enables corn producers to continue to answer the demand for such an important crop while navigating the challenges that it typically faces.

The challenges that accompany corn production may be the answer as to why West Texas corn crops make up such a small percentage of the total cropping system in the region. Still, it doesn’t make it any less valuable. It’s an invaluable commodity that is crucial to the success of other industries in our area, and especially to agriculture as a whole throughout the rest of the United States.
